Design is the first step I took in creating Michelle Yuen Jewelry.
All of our jewelry is designed around opal, and every piece is set with opal. The diversity of opal and the richness of its colors allow me, even with only one gemstone, to create jewelry of different styles and designs.
The Essence series opal rings were the brand's first collection, but rather than a designed series, they are more like my "gemstone experiments." This was my first time designing jewelry, trying out different shapes of opals, including round, oval, marquise, square, and other shapes, hand-drawing and then finding the best ratio and arrangement of the main and accent stones. After a series of imagination and drawing, I finally reached a slightly finalized stage, because my brain was always unsatisfied with the design before.
When there is only one main stone in the design, choosing opals is relatively easy. However, when there are multiple opals in a design, selecting them becomes more challenging.
These two band rings, which are deeply loved by everyone, made me cry and laugh. I am very happy that everyone likes them, but selecting the stones for them was also challenging.
This is a ring with round opals and zircons connected together. It is very cute and delicate.
When I first drew the Round Band Ring, I suddenly felt that it looked like the eye of the Ohmu, the giant insects from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, which Nausicaä found in the Toxic Jungle.
